How to measure your students
Girth is the key measurement – measure from the top of one shoulder, down over the chest, between the legs and back up to the same shoulder. If a dancer is between sizes, always choose the larger one.
Getting the size right starts with a few simple measurements. Here's how to take them.
Before you start
- Use a soft tape measure and record everything in centimetres.
- Measure over close-fitting clothing, such as a leotard or leggings.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight – you should be able to slip a finger underneath.
- It's easier with two people: one to measure and one to note down the numbers.
Three things to know
Girth matters most. It's the measurement that decides whether a leotard, unitard or all-in-one will fit, so take your time with it.
Between sizes? Go up. If a dancer falls between two sizes, always choose the larger one.
Our sizes are standardised. We stock styles from lots of different manufacturers, so we use one consistent size chart across the whole range. Measure once and compare against our chart – no need to worry about each brand's own sizing.
1. Girth
Ask the dancer to stand up straight. Start at the top of one shoulder, take the tape down over the fullest part of the chest, between the legs and up the back, finishing at the same shoulder.
2. Bust
With the dancer's arms relaxed at their sides, measure around the fullest part of the chest.
3. Waist
Ask the dancer to bend to one side. The crease that forms is their natural waist – place the tape there. Once they've straightened up, measure around the body at that point.
4. Hips
With the dancer's feet together, measure around the fullest part of the hips and bottom.
5. Inseam
With the dancer barefoot, measure the inside of the leg from the top of the thigh to the floor.
